Laser etching on Wood

Photography etymologically means “drawing with light.” A photograph of a bamboo window grill with a Solihiya pattern, the kind usually found in many rural homes in the Philippines, was printed, photocopied, scanned, uploaded to a laser engraving machine. The image was etched on wood with laser. The work asserts that laser etching/engraving is a form of printing. An image was produced from a digital master image literally using light, through a chemical process called combustion. In the process, the work also highlighted the importance of material to the appearance of an image; wood grains had varying combustibility, which affected the form and texture of the resulting image.
